Course overview

Kick start your career as a hairdresser with this entry-level qualification. This course is an essential minimum requirement for every hairdresser.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, hairdressing skills are in demand with employers finding it hard to fill vacancies. The industry is currently experiencing strong growth with more than 31,000 job openings expected over the next five years. 

Learn modern salon operations including how to colour and lighten hair, provide shampoo and basin services, and how to design and cut hair. All of this will take place in the classroom and real functioning professional salon environments.

Successful completion of this course will provide you all you need to confidently seek employment opportunities in hairdressing.

Selection criteria

Domestic students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to domestic students:

It is highly recommended that students have basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills or equivalent to Year 10, turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

Apprenticeship pathway
To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

International students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International.
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.  

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Kit requirements: Students will be responsible for purchasing the items that are required for hairdressing. This includes brushes, scissors, combs, blow dryer, thermal equipment, clippers and razors. These requirements will be discussed in detail on the first day of class and students should not purchase the items prior to study. 

Uniform: Students are required to wear a black shirt or top with sleeves, black pants or skirt and enclosed shoes. This uniform is required within the industry and meets workplace health and safety requirements.

Materials: You will need to purchase an A4-sized lever arch folder (Large) plus A4 dividers and reinforcement ring stickers suitable for this folder, as well as a USB and general writing materials such as pens, pencils, erasers and glue.

Robina campus
The Robina campus will be a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus for general learning.  Students are able to access discounted pricing for device purchases via JB Hi-Fi.  TAFE Queensland will have some portable devices available for short term loan and there will also be a limited number of desktop computers located on-site that students will be able to access.  For all the details visit the BYOD page on our website.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
