If you choose to work while you are studying in Australia, you are entitled to certain rights including minimum wages, allowances, overtime, penalty rates, working hours and days off for holidays/vacations, long service or sick leave. You should be paid for all hours you work, including trial shifts and probation. Agreed voluntary work for charities, or vocational placement as part of your course, are exceptions to this rule.
If you believe you're not receiving your minimum rights and conditions at work, contact the Fair Work Ombudsman for free information and advice. There is also an interpreting service available.
